800 Grit Sanding Sponge

Before a surface can be buffed or polished, the scratches left by previous sanding steps must be completely refined. 800 grit sanding sponge operates at P800, bridging the gap between P400–P600 sanding and final polishing compounds. It removes the fine defects and orange peel left by intermediate grades. The aluminum oxide or silicon carbide grain is mounted on a flexible sponge body, allowing the abrasive to follow curved panels and edges without cutting a flat spot.

On automotive clear coat, P800 eliminates orange peel before compounding. On metal, it prepares the surface for brushing or mirror polishing. On wood coatings, it refines brush marks and dust nibs. On acrylics, it works down scratches prior to clarity restoration. Wet sanding is highly recommended at this stage to keep the surface lubricated and prevent clogging or overheating the thin film.

Light, consistent pressure is critical. Heavy pressure will not speed up the process; it will only risk sanding through the clear coat or creating an uneven surface. The sponge is typically used after P400–P600 and before P1500 or P2000.
